Grimma lies on the Mulde river in Saxony, southeast of Leipzig. The river defines its map: the old town sits on the western bank in a compact block of streets around the market square, with the castle and the former princely school close to the water. On the eastern bank, wooded slopes rise above the valley.
The town's closeness to the Mulde has shaped its history. The floods of 2002 caused severe damage to the old town, and Grimma has since built extensive flood defences along the river. The Pöppelmann bridge crosses the Mulde here, and a pedestrian suspension bridge spans the river nearby.
