Guaranda is the capital of Bolívar province and sits high in the central Andes of Ecuador, at roughly 2,600 metres. Ecuadorians often call it the city of seven hills, and the map shows why. The town does not spread across a flat valley floor. It fits into the gaps between rounded summits, so its outline is irregular and pinched.
At the centre, a tighter grid of colonial-era blocks marks the old town, arranged around its main square. Beyond that core the pattern loosens. Streets follow contour lines, switch back up hillsides and stop where the ground gets too steep. Green space on the map is mostly the hills themselves, not planned parks.

The historic centre forms the most regular part of the plan, a small grid of blocks around the main square that stands out from the winding streets on the hillsides around it.

Roads leave the city along the valleys between the hills. Seen from above, they are the few long, continuous lines in a plan made mostly of short, curving segments.
