Gudermes is the second-largest town in Chechnya, located east of Grozny on the flat plain north of the Caucasus foothills. On a map, the railway is the defining feature. Several lines meet at the station, and the town is arranged around the tracks, with residential streets on both sides and the Sunzha River running close by.
The town grew as a railway junction on the route between Rostov and Baku, and it remains an important transport point in the region. In recent years, large parts of the town have been rebuilt and new districts added, and they appear as regular, planned blocks next to older, more irregular streets.
