Guéckédou is in the Nzérékoré Region of southeastern Guinea, in the hilly, forested zone known as Forest Guinea. It lies close to where Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia meet. From above the town is a cluster of streets on uneven ground, with roads leading out through green countryside toward the neighbouring prefectures and the borders.
The town is well known in the region for its large weekly market, which draws traders from across the three countries. The land around it is covered by forest, plantations and small farms, and streams run through the valleys.
