Guiren is a town in the north of Jiangsu province, in the low country of lakes and canals that covers much of the region. The land is almost perfectly flat and threaded with water. Drainage channels, irrigation canals and fish ponds divide the fields into long rectangular strips. From above, the town itself is a compact cluster of streets inside this finely divided farmland.
As in many towns in this part of China, the map is shaped more by water management than by terrain. Roads often run alongside canals, and the regular geometry of fields and ponds marks the edge of the built-up area. Newer homes and shops tend to follow straight lines, while the lanes near the centre are usually narrower and less regular.
