Guna is a district headquarters in northern Madhya Pradesh, where the Malwa plateau begins to break into low hills and rocky ground. The town is fairly compact. Its older, irregular centre has grown outward along the main roads, and scattered hills and reservoirs around it give the surrounding landscape some variation.
