Vidisha lies on the eastern bank of the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh, northeast of Bhopal. From above, the river curves along the western side of the town. The dense, irregular lanes of the older quarters sit close to it, while newer colonies and roads stretch towards the east.
The area has a long history. Ancient Besnagar stood nearby, and the Heliodorus Pillar, erected in the second century BCE, still stands there. The Udayagiri Caves with their Gupta-period sculptures are a short distance away, and the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi lie within easy reach.
