Habiganj lies in the Sylhet Division of northeastern Bangladesh, on the Khowai River, which winds through the town on its way down from the hills of Tripura. The town is compact, with streets tightly packed near the river and the bazaar, and it thins quickly into villages and paddy land outside.
The district around it covers two very different landscapes. To the west are the low haors, broad seasonal wetlands that turn into inland seas during the monsoon. To the east rise gentle hills covered in tea gardens and forest, including Satchari National Park. Natural gas fields in the district are important to the national energy supply.
