Haguenau lies in northern Alsace, on the Moder River, and its map is shaped by two things: the tight medieval core and the enormous forest that begins just beyond the town. The old centre forms a dense oval of narrow streets, with the river looping through it, while broad boulevards trace the line of the former fortifications around the edge.
In the twelfth century the town was a favoured residence of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who built an imperial palace here, and Haguenau later led the Decapolis, the league of ten free imperial cities of Alsace. Little of the palace survives, but the shape of a fortified town is still legible in the street plan.
To the north and east stretches the Forest of Haguenau, one of the largest forests in France, which on a map appears as a broad empty field crossed by straight forest roads.
