Haninge is a municipality just south of Stockholm, reaching from suburban neighbourhoods near the city to a long stretch of Baltic coast. Its main centre is Handen, a town that grew around the commuter railway line to Nynäshamn. From above, the built-up areas appear as compact clusters strung along the railway and main roads, set within large areas of forest, rock and water.
The eastern part of the map dissolves into the Stockholm archipelago. Inlets cut deep into the mainland, and islands of every size lie offshore, including Utö, known for its old iron mines and summer visitors. In summer, ferries link many of them to the mainland. The resulting coastline is intricate and irregular, one of the most detailed shapes any map can hold.
Inland, Haninge includes part of Tyresta National Park, an area of old-growth forest and lakes, as well as many smaller nature reserves. Lakes and bogs break up the woodland into irregular patches. Handen and neighbouring centres sit along the railway line toward Nynäshamn, forming a chain of dense clusters that contrast with the open forest around them.
