Herrenberg lies in the Böblingen district of Baden-Württemberg, south-west of Stuttgart, at the point where the open farmland of the Gäu meets the wooded hills of the Schönbuch. The old town climbs the slope of the Schlossberg, and on the map its streets curve around the hillside in concentric arcs, giving the historic centre a distinctive fan shape.
At the top of the old town stands the Stiftskirche, the large collegiate church whose broad, heavy shape earned it the nickname Glucke vom Gäu, the mother hen of the Gäu. Below it the market square is lined with half-timbered houses, and narrow lanes run down the slope toward the newer parts of town.
