Huaicheng is the county seat of Huaiji, in Zhaoqing prefecture in the north-west of Guangdong province. Unlike the flat, heavily built Pearl River Delta further south, this is hill country, and the town has grown along the lower ground where the valleys widen enough to allow it.
That setting is clear from above. The built-up area stretches out along its river and main roads, with newer districts laid out in wider, more regular blocks and the older core packed more tightly. The hills close in on the edges of the frame, so the town looks less like a spreading plain and more like something that has filled the only available space.
