Jagtiāl is the headquarters of Jagtial district in northern Telangana, on the Deccan plateau south of the Godavari River. The town has grown outward from an older centre of narrow, irregular lanes. Newer quarters extend along the main roads that connect it to Karimnagar and other towns in the region, which gives the map a dense middle and long arms.
Its best-known landmark is Jagtial Fort, an eighteenth-century fort with a distinctive star-shaped plan and a surrounding moat. On a map that geometry stands out against the organic streets around it. As in much of Telangana, the surroundings are dotted with tanks, reservoirs built to store monsoon rain, which appear as smooth shapes among the fields.
