Jhang lies in the plains of central Punjab, close to the Chenab River, which runs to the west of the city. The surrounding landscape is flat and intensively farmed, watered by irrigation canals that cut long straight lines across the countryside. From above, those canals and the field boundaries around them create a rectilinear frame around the built-up area.
The city is closely tied to one of Punjab's best-known stories. Heer, heroine of the romance Heer Ranjha, is traditionally said to have come from Jhang, and the tale, retold most famously in the verse of Waris Shah, remains central to the region's culture.
