Jiangyou lies in northern Sichuan, where the Fu River leaves the mountains for the edge of the Sichuan Basin. The river runs through the city in a broad curve, and the urban area has grown on both banks, joined by several bridges. From above, the centre mixes older, tighter streets with newer, wider avenues laid out in regular blocks.
The city is best known as the place where Li Bai, one of China's greatest poets, spent his childhood and youth. His former home in the nearby town of Qinglian draws admirers of Tang poetry, and memorials and parks dedicated to him appear across the city.
Jiangyou is also an industrial city with a long tradition of steel production, and its industrial zones and rail lines sit alongside the residential districts. Both banks are built up. The densest blocks sit close to the water, and newer districts extend outward along straighter, more planned streets.
Hills at the edge
Low hills rise around the city, and the street pattern thins out as the land climbs. The green areas this leaves behind frame the composition naturally.
