Kadaň is a historic town in the Ústí nad Labem Region of northwestern Bohemia, on the left bank of the Ohře River. Its medieval core is still easy to see from above. There is a compact oval of streets around a central square, partly ringed by old fortification lines, with the castle sitting on the edge above the water.
The town is known for Katova ulička, the Executioner's Lane, often described as one of the narrowest streets in the country. Just outside the centre stands a Franciscan monastery. Newer housing estates and industrial areas spread out to the south and west, and the Ore Mountains fill the northern horizon.

The Ohře River
The river curves along the edge of the old town. Its bridges and banks set a strong natural boundary on one side of the map.
