Kakata is the capital of Margibi County, located northeast of Monrovia on the main route toward Liberia's interior. On a map the town takes shape around this highway, with a market-oriented centre and residential streets reaching out on either side. The surroundings are green and low, and settlement gradually loosens into farms and rubber plantations.
The town is well known in Liberia as the home of the Booker Washington Institute, a vocational school founded in 1929 and one of the country's oldest educational institutions.
