Kalisz grew up where the Prosna breaks into several arms, and the map still shows it. Narrow channels thread through the centre and wrap around the old town, so streets have to bend and cross short bridges to get anywhere. Past the river, the grid loosens into residential blocks and then into the flat farmland of Greater Poland.
Kalisz is often called the oldest town in Poland. The claim rests on a place named Calisia in Ptolemy's second-century geography, which many historians link to this site.
