Kaohsiung lies on Taiwan's southwest coast and is built around one of the country's largest harbours. From above, the most striking feature is Cijin, a long, narrow island that runs parallel to the shore and shelters the port. Ferries and a tunnel link the island to the mainland.
The Love River winds through the city centre, lined with parks and walkways. Streets follow a mostly regular grid, broken by the river and rail lines. Near the harbour, former warehouses at Pier-2 have become an arts district, giving the waterfront a different character from the industrial areas further south.
To the north, Shoushan, a hill by the sea, rises above the port. Further inland, Lotus Pond in Zuoying is surrounded by temples and pavilions. A Kaohsiung map poster shows how the harbour, the island and the river shape this southern city.

Love River
The Love River winds through the city centre, lined with parks. Its curves break up the street grid and lead toward the harbour.
