Kapellen lies on the Lower Rhine plain in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, not far from the border with the Netherlands. The land is almost perfectly flat, so the map is shaped by human geometry rather than relief. A village core, residential streets and a pattern of rectangular fields are crossed by straight farm roads.
Water appears in the form of small streams and drainage ditches, which are characteristic of the Lower Rhine landscape. They run as thin lines between the fields. Clusters of houses and farmsteads interrupt the open land at regular intervals, which gives the wider view a quiet, even rhythm.
