Krefeld lies on the left bank of the Lower Rhine, northwest of Düsseldorf. Its centre is unusually geometric for a German city: a rectangle of streets framed by four long boulevards known as the Wälle, laid out in the early nineteenth century as the town expanded. Beyond them, the city spreads in a looser pattern toward the Rhine and the surrounding farmland.
Krefeld grew wealthy on silk and velvet and is still known as the city of velvet and silk. The textile families behind that trade, among them Mennonite merchants, built villas and parks around the centre. To the east, the district of Uerdingen reaches the Rhine with its harbour, and in Linn a moated medieval castle, Burg Linn, sits among green space.

The eastern district of Uerdingen meets the Rhine with harbour basins and a bridge. It brings the map its only large body of water.
