Khon Kaen is the main city of northeastern Thailand's Isan region, set on the flat Khorat Plateau. From above, the Friendship Highway runs north–south through the city, and the urban area is organised along it and the railway. Streets form a loose grid in the centre, while larger roads and ring routes push outward into suburbs and rice land.
Two features stand out on any map. Bueng Kaen Nakhon, a large, nearly round lake on the southern side of the centre, is circled by a road and park and is where many residents walk and exercise. To the northwest lies the wide campus of Khon Kaen University, one of the largest in the country, with long roads, ponds and green space.
