Ubon Ratchathani is the capital of Thailand's easternmost province, in the lower Isan region near the borders with Laos and Cambodia. The city lies on the northern bank of the Mun River, which curves broadly along its southern edge. On a map the street grid spreads north from the water across level ground.

This large park near the centre forms a clean open rectangle in the street grid and hosts the main displays of the Candle Festival each year.
