Kłodzko lies in Lower Silesia, in south-western Poland, at the centre of a basin ringed by the Sudetes mountains. The Nysa Kłodzka river runs through the town, and on a map the old town rises from its bank onto a hill, with the massive star-shaped outline of Kłodzko Fortress crowning the high ground above.
The fortress is one of the largest of its kind in the region, with bastions and underground passages that have long made it the town's defining landmark. Below it, a Gothic stone bridge lined with statues crosses the Młynówka channel, often compared to Charles Bridge in Prague for its similar character.
