Koungou is a commune on the northeast coast of Grande-Terre, the main island of Mayotte, just north of Mamoudzou. It is one of the most populous communes on the island. On a map, it appears as a series of villages lined along the coast road, each clustered where a small valley reaches the shore.
The coast here faces the lagoon, one of the largest enclosed lagoons in the world, ringed by a barrier reef. The commune also includes Longoni, home to Mayotte's main commercial port. Behind the shoreline, the land rises quickly into steep, forested hills, so settlement stays close to the water.
