Kuala Lumpur takes its name, roughly meaning muddy confluence, from the meeting of the Klang and Gombak rivers. Masjid Jamek stands on the spit of land where they join. From that point the city spread along the river valleys and across the surrounding hills. Its road network curves and loops to follow the terrain rather than any grid.
Near the confluence is Merdeka Square, where Malaysian independence was declared in 1957. To the northeast rise the Petronas Twin Towers, with KLCC Park at their foot. West of the old centre, the Perdana Botanical Gardens, long known as the Lake Gardens, form a large green area. Elevated highways and rail lines cross the city on long curving paths.

The Perdana Botanical Gardens cover a broad area west of the centre. On the poster they read as calm open ground beside dense streets.
