Petaling Jaya was planned in the 1950s as a satellite town for Kuala Lumpur, and it has since grown into a city in its own right. Its plan still shows that origin. The area is divided into numbered sections, and residents describe where they live with addresses such as Section 17 or SS2. Each section has its own layout of streets and cul-de-sacs.
Major highways cross the city on the map, most prominently the Federal Highway linking Kuala Lumpur and Klang, along with several elevated expressways. Their long curves and looping interchanges stand out clearly against the finer residential streets, which bend around small parks, schools and rows of neighbourhood shops.
Low hills and green reserves break the pattern in places. On one side the city blends into Kuala Lumpur, and on the others into more Klang Valley towns. Federal Highway
The main artery between Kuala Lumpur and Klang cuts through Petaling Jaya as a thick, steady line, bordered by interchanges and commercial buildings.
