Kulgam is a town in the southern part of the Kashmir Valley and the headquarters of the district of the same name. The land here slopes gently from the valley floor toward the Pir Panjal range in the south. Streams coming down from the mountains water paddy fields and the apple orchards the district is known for.
On the map, the town forms a compact core of streets and markets. Roads lead out from it across the countryside. The Veshaw River passes nearby, its braided channel spreading across a wide bed.
