Kuta lies on the western shore of the narrow neck of land that joins Bali to the Bukit Peninsula. It was one of the first places on the island to attract surfers and backpackers in the late twentieth century, and its long sandy beach, known for sunsets, is still what most visitors remember.
From above, the coastline curves gently as a clean arc, while the town behind it forms a dense tangle of small lanes, or gang, with only a few larger roads between them. Just to the south, the runway of Ngurah Rai International Airport extends out on reclaimed land into the water. To the north, Kuta merges into Legian and Seminyak without a visible break.
