La Verne lies in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. It began as a citrus town, and although the orchards have mostly gone, the plan still shows that past: a small historic centre, tree-lined residential streets, and land that slopes gently up toward the mountains.
At the heart of the city is the University of La Verne, whose campus sits right next to the old downtown along Bonita Avenue. From above, campus buildings, quads and car parks form a compact block beside the small grid of shops and houses. To the north, streets begin to curve as the ground rises into the foothills.
