Laḩij lies on the coastal plain of southern Yemen, a short distance north of Aden. It sits in the delta of Wadi Tuban, where seasonal floods have long been spread across fields for farming. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets and courtyard buildings, surrounded by plots of cultivated land and dry channels.
For centuries the town was the seat of a local sultanate, and it served as a political and agricultural centre for the region. Laḩij is also known in Yemen and beyond for its musical tradition, with songs and poets associated with the town and its surroundings.
