Langenfeld lies in the Rhineland between Düsseldorf and Cologne, a short distance east of the Rhine. From above, it is a spread-out town grown from several former villages, and you can still sense those older centres in the way the streets gather and loosen. Motorways run along its edges, and woodland and fields fill the gaps.
To the west, lakes created by former gravel extraction appear as smooth, bright shapes on the map, a common sight in the Rhine lowlands. Langenfeld became widely known in Germany for its finances: in 2008 it was reported as the first debt-free city in North Rhine-Westphalia, an unusual distinction for a town of its size.
