Las Vegas lies in a broad desert valley surrounded by mountains, with the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon to the west and the Sheep Range to the north. On the map the city is an enormous, very regular grid of wide arterial roads spaced about a mile apart, with curving suburban streets filling the squares between them.
Two lines stand out. Interstate 15 runs diagonally through the valley, and alongside it Las Vegas Boulevard carries the Strip south from the older downtown. Downtown itself, around Fremont Street, preserves the original town site laid out when the railway founded the city in 1905.
Most of the famous casino resorts are technically in unincorporated Paradise rather than inside city limits, but the valley reads as one continuous metropolis. A Las Vegas map poster shows the geometry beneath the lights: a desert grid shaped by the railway, the highway and the mountains.
