Leifeng lies in the Changsha area of Hunan province, on the west side of the Xiang river plain. It takes its name from Lei Feng, the soldier widely known in China as a model of selfless service, who came from this part of the Changsha region.
On a map, the area shows the typical pattern of China's expanding urban fringe. Wide new roads and large residential or industrial blocks sit next to older village clusters, fish ponds and fields, with low hills rising in places and small rivers and channels running between them.
