Lengerich lies in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the long, narrow ridge of the Teutoburg Forest crosses the Münsterland. The map is shaped by that ridge. It runs through the area as a wooded band of dense contour lines, with the town centre spread across its foot and residential streets extending onto the flatter land around it.
The limestone of the ridge has long been quarried here, and the cement industry is an important part of the local economy. Large quarries appear on the map as sharp-edged, stepped hollows in the hillside. The A1 motorway also passes close by, and its long, gentle curve contrasts with the compact historic streets.
