Lianzhou lies in the far northwest of Guangdong, in a valley surrounded by forested mountains near the borders of Hunan and Guangxi. From above, the city follows the course of the Lian River, with its older districts packed along the banks and newer roads reaching into the flatter land around. Beyond the edges, the map turns quickly into hills.
Lianzhou is widely known for the Lianzhou Foto festival, an international photography festival held in the city since 2005 that has brought contemporary art to old warehouses and industrial buildings. The surrounding region also has a strong Yao ethnic presence, especially in the mountain counties nearby.
