Lubań lies in Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland, in the historic region of Upper Lusatia, close to the German and Czech borders. The Kwisa river flows through the area, and its winding course adds a soft line to the map. The old town is compact and roughly oval. The line of the medieval defences that once enclosed it still defines its shape.
In the Middle Ages, Lubań was one of the six towns of the Lusatian League, an alliance of trading cities in Upper Lusatia. Sections of the town walls survive, along with the Brothers' Tower, and the town hall stands in the market square. Later districts spread out from the historic core across gently rolling ground.
A Lubań map poster shows these stages of growth clearly: a dense medieval centre, the ring where the walls stood, newer streets beyond it and the river curving past. It is a fine example of the Central European small-town plan, easy to read and full of meaning for those who know it.
