Luchingu is in Tanzania's Mtwara Region, in the south of the country near the border with Mozambique. The area is mostly highland, with farms and villages spread across open ground. From above, the town is a loose group of streets and plots. Paths branch off in many directions to connect homes, fields and neighbouring settlements.
This corner of Tanzania is rural, and settlement patterns follow farming more than planning. Roads are few and paths are many, which gives the map a delicate, net-like look. To the south, the land descends towards the valley of the Ruvuma River, which marks the international border.
