Songea is the main town of the Ruvuma Region in southern Tanzania, set in rolling, green highland country not far from the border with Mozambique. It is an administrative and trading centre for a largely agricultural region, and its map reflects that role: a compact centre with a market and government buildings, and neighbourhoods spreading outward along the main roads.
The terrain is uneven, so streets curve with the land rather than keeping a strict grid. Main roads leave the town toward Njombe in the north, toward Mbinga and Lake Nyasa in the west, and toward Tunduru in the east, giving the map a star-like structure. Between them, residential areas and fields fill the gently rolling ground.
Songea is remembered as a key site of the Maji Maji uprising against German colonial rule in 1905 to 1907, and a memorial and museum in the town honour those who were executed there. A Songea map poster shows the quiet shape of that place today, a regional town arranged around its roads and hills.
