Tunduma lies in southwestern Tanzania, right on the border with Zambia, opposite the Zambian town of Nakonde. Its shape comes almost entirely from the road. The main highway from Dar es Salaam and Mbeya passes through the town to the border post, and the built-up area stretches along it, with markets, warehouses, lodges and truck parks lining both sides.
It is one of the busiest crossings in the region, a key point on the corridor that carries goods between the port of Dar es Salaam and Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond. The TAZARA railway, built in the 1970s to link Tanzania and Zambia, also passes close by. Long lines of trucks waiting to cross are a familiar sight.

The border line
The international boundary with Zambia crosses the southwestern edge of the town, where Tunduma merges into Nakonde, making the border an unusual feature on a city map.
