Ludhiana is the largest city in Punjab by population, and its map shows a place that grew quickly around industry and trade. The older core near the railway station is a tight mesh of narrow lanes and bazaars. Planned sectors, model towns and industrial areas spread outward in more regular blocks across the flat farmland of the plain.
The Sutlej River flows north of the city. The Budha Nullah, a stream that follows an old course of the river, crosses the urban area before joining it. The Grand Trunk Road, one of the oldest routes in South Asia, passes through Ludhiana between Delhi and Amritsar, and the main railway line runs alongside it.
The city is known for its hosiery and knitwear and as a centre of bicycle making. Punjab Agricultural University, closely linked with the Green Revolution in India, has its campus here. Grand Trunk Road
The historic highway crosses the city as one of its main roads. Its strong, straight line ties Ludhiana to Delhi in one direction and Amritsar in the other.
