Phagwāra lies in the Doaba region of Punjab, on the historic Grand Trunk Road between Jalandhar and Ludhiana. From above, the highway runs through the town as a strong straight line, with the railway alongside. The older bazaar area forms a dense knot of streets, while newer residential colonies spread in looser grids. Flat, intensively farmed fields surround the whole town.
The town is a commercial and industrial centre for the area, with a long history in sugar and manufacturing. Just outside it, Lovely Professional University occupies a vast campus beside the highway, one of the largest university campuses in India, and it draws students from across the country and abroad.
