Lüdinghausen is in the Münsterland, the flat, green region of North Rhine-Westphalia known for its moated houses. The town calls itself the Dreiburgenstadt, the town of three castles: Burg Lüdinghausen, Burg Vischering and the remains of Burg Wolfsberg. From above, their moats and ponds show up as neat rectangles of water among the streets and parkland.
