Mahgawān lies in the north of Madhya Pradesh, in the plains of the Chambal region east of Gwalior. The country here is level and open, and on a map the town appears as a small, concentrated patch of streets surrounded by a wide mesh of field boundaries, village tracks and irrigation lines that stretch in every direction.
Like many towns of its size in the region, it works as a local centre for the surrounding villages, with main roads carrying traffic in and out and a market area at its heart. The older lanes are narrow and irregular, while newer building has spread outwards along the roads leading away from the centre.
