This Māndvi is a town in the Surat district of southern Gujarat, set on the banks of the Tapi river, upstream from Surat. It is not the better-known port town of the same name in Kutch. It serves as the centre of its taluka, a local market and administrative hub for the farming villages around it, where sugarcane and other crops are grown on the fertile plain.
On a map, the river is the defining feature. The Tapi runs past in a broad curve, and the older part of the town gathers along its bank, with narrow, irregular lanes. Further from the water, the streets widen and straighten, and newer housing spreads along the main roads. Beyond that, the fields of the plain take over.
