Marbach am Neckar lies north of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, on high ground above a bend of the Neckar where the Murr river flows in. The old town is compact and roughly oval, with narrow streets inside the line of its former walls. Around it newer districts spread over the plateau, and vineyards and orchards cover the slopes down to the river.
Marbach is best known as the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller, born here in 1759. His birth house stands in the old town, and on the Schillerhöhe above the Neckar are the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive, one of the most important literary collections in Germany.
