Massiogo is in the Sikasso region of southern Mali, the country's greenest and most intensively farmed area, not far from the borders with Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. The landscape is savanna, with fields, scattered trees and seasonal streams, and the settlement sits within it as a clearly defined cluster.
Seen from above, the pattern is simple and strong. A few roads lead in from the surrounding countryside and meet in the settlement, where compounds and lanes form a compact, irregular core. Around it, farm tracks divide the land into fields, and seasonal watercourses leave faint lines across the terrain.
