Minturno lies at the southern tip of Lazio, close to the border with Campania. The medieval town sits on a hill a few kilometres inland, its narrow streets following the slope in tight curves. Below it, the land flattens towards the coast, where the seaside district of Scauri stretches along the Gulf of Gaeta.
Near the mouth of the Garigliano river lie the remains of ancient Minturnae, a Roman colony with a theatre, forum and stretches of the Via Appia. During the Second World War the Gustav Line ran along the Garigliano, and the area saw heavy fighting in 1944, recalled by nearby war cemeteries.
