Mocímboa da Praia lies on the coast of Cabo Delgado province, in the far north of Mozambique, where a wide bay opens onto the Indian Ocean. From above, the town sits on the shore, its streets running down toward the water and a small port. Across the bay, tidal flats and channels spread out and change shape with every tide.
Near the waterfront the street plan is more regular. Further inland it loosens into neighbourhoods of smaller houses and footpaths. Beyond them, bush and farmland stretch away, crossed by the main road along the coast. Streets lead down to the shore and a small harbour, the point where the town meets the sea and where fishing boats and coastal traffic gather.
