Montclair is a small city at the western edge of San Bernardino County, in the Pomona Valley of Southern California. On a map it forms a compact, almost rectangular area laid out on the regular grid that characterises much of the inland valleys, with long north–south and east–west streets dividing it into even blocks.
A major freeway runs across the city, and a rail line with a Metrolink station links Montclair to Los Angeles and the rest of the region. Near the transit centre, a large regional shopping mall occupies a sizeable block, surrounded by parking and wide arterial roads.
The San Gabriel Mountains rise to the north, beyond the edge of the map, and on clear days they form the backdrop to the long straight avenues.
